Regalia Tibetan Terrier and Jeanette Chaix: Best Bred Tibetan Terrier

Original review Oct 02, 2023

My family adopted our TT from Jeanette Chaix in Sep 2019. I was always a cat person but my husband convinced me that our children needed a dog in their lives.

And, boy, was he correct!

I cannot say enough positive things about having this TT join our family. No health issues, beautiful, rambunctious but stubborn as heck.

When we drove the 2+ hours from the East Bay to visit with the puppies, Jeanette and her husband were beyond gracious. We learned the history behind Jeanette and her breeding techniques and were introduced to ALL the puppies. A few adult dogs were even brought out to visit with us.

Having read the Aug 2019 complaint (posted by Cate) accusing Jeanette of breeding sick and genetically deformed dogs, along with deceptive selling practices, is not the experience we had with Jeanette in Sep 2019.

If you carefully read Cate's posting, there are many inconsistencies and claims she is stating from her 17+ year resentment of Jeanette.

Yes, Jeanette did not provide us with the AKC papers after a few telephone reminders but in reality am I going to breed my TT or enter her in a show ... NO!

Is Jeanette running a puppy mill ...

certainly NOT!

Jeanette is getting up there in age but she continues to breed beautiful and healthy TTs. I highly recommend Regalia Tibetan Terriers.

Zero Paperwork or Follow-Up, but GREAT PUPS

The President of the AKC TT Club told me Jeanette was no longer a member but "she breeds good dogs. I have one of her dogs." She fails to provide paperwork or lineage, can no longer remember which pup is which... but we were looking for a pet, and an adorable rascal she is. TTs are not easy to come by, so we are 100% happy we found Jeanette.

I met and decided to purchase a beautiful TT pup from this breeder. I was really interested in shaggy dogs and low prey drive (we have pet cats and a bunny) and we have experience with shih tzus and standard schnauzers and hunting dogs. TTs were on my list but until I met our baby, I wasn't sold. Holy cow, he is wonderful. He was crate trained, and potty- trained within a month with us. He has been checked by our vet and dna cleared. His parents passed health tests and he's clear so far. I think they breed for looks and personality, my dog would not meet a standard, but he is strikingly beautifuI would buy another pup from this breeder.wowi and very friendly. friendly. this this breeder

Regalia Tibetan Terriers - Look, don't listen
These websites allow people to post extremely derogatory comments and vicious names without identifying themselves, in this case, to savage one of the top breeders of Tibetan Terriers in the United States. Jeanette Chaix has been breeding Tibetans for approximately 40 years. She has produced more than 250 champions and grand champions in the breed. MANY of the Tibetan Terrier breeders in the U.S. got their start with Regalia Tibetans. When I first got a Tibetan in California, every time I saw another Tibetan, they had gotten it from Jeanette. I am now on my third and fourth Regalia Tibetan and they are amazing, healthy, beautiful dogs. Has one of her dogs ever been sick? Of course. And if someone thinks there are "a lot" of them -- well after 40 years in the breed there are a lot of Regalia Tibetans out there! I have ALWAYS found Jeanette to be responsible and generous. I have seen her pay for a puppy's operation for its owners, she has sent me meds for my own dog for things that had nothing to do with "genetics." When a friend of mine's dog was attacked by a raccoon and had a serious adverse reaction to the vaccine, when she thought she was going to lose her dog, Jeanette offered to replace the dog -- and it wasn't even a Regalia dog. Amazing that people like this (and possible competitors) can go on the Internet and post things like "liar," "crook," "puppy mill," about one of the real leaders in this breed, and never have to show their face or back up these serious allegations. There are certainly two sides to every story, but on this site you can post whatever you want, full of "it's likely," "apparently," "someone said," etc. and have absolutely no consequences for it. If someone feels "defrauded," they should take it to small claims court, where both parties present their side to the judge who can make an objective decision based on FACTS, not name calling. And show your face.

Thank you for posting this! I bought two beautiful pups from Jeannette, 20 and 23 years ago.

They lived to thirteen and fourteen, and their 14 year old son is still with us.

All had healthy, happy lives, and displayed that classic Tibetan 'independent thinking'! There appears to be alot of jealousy among breeders...

We purchased a 3 month old TT from Jannette, being our third TT. She and her husband were very informative, gave us a tour of their historic home across the street and made us feel at home. No, we did not see the kennels however the mother and father were brought out. She introduced us to a TT group and the dogs and people all have fun. Janette is a bet well respected member.

Jeanette Chaix dba Regalia Tibetan Terriers switched my pre-paid show pup for lesser pet-quality pup; never sent papers; contract broken; no response

105 Center Street, Jackson, CA

Jeanette Chaix of Regalia Tibetan Terriers sold me a different dog than the one I had already paid for (and visited three times), but she never sent me its papers. She committed fraud and is/was likely operating a puppy mill.

In late 2000, I was looking for a dog to rescue and found an abandoned mid-sized dog in Lake County, CA to keep my older Yorkie company.

Couldn’t discern his breed, if any, but he was such a personable young dog.

After seeing a photo of a Tibetan Terrier with Rags’ white, grey and beige coloring, I did a lot of research on the breed and found a Tibetan breeder in Forestville, Sonoma County—about 90 minutes from my home. I called made an appointment with Jeanette Chaix of Regalia to bring Rags over to get her opinion on whether he was a Tibetan terrier.

She confirmed that Rags was probably a Tibetan and checked her records to see if he was one of her pups (not likely). She was also showing a new litter of adorable puppies, most of which were sold. I inquired about purchasing one, and she said that another litter would be born soon.

When my Yorkie passed away, I went to Jeanette’s by appointment and chose a beautifully marked male pup from the newborn litter.

She said that he was a show-quality dog and named the price. I gave her a cash deposit of half the money and got a receipt. She took pictures of me with the pup (“so she would remember which dog it was.”) I also took pictures.

The dog would be ready to take home in about 10 weeks. Despite requests to see the puppies’ parents, I was never allowed into the kennels where the dogs were kept; she brought them out to the lawn or the family room a few at a time.

I may have seen the mother once.

Jeanette allowed me to visit and play with him and his littermates twice more, although one time she was not home for our scheduled appointment. I paid her the balance owed well in advance so that she would be certain to save me that puppy.

On the day I was to pick up my dog, I arrived at the appointed time (confirmed twice, so that she would be home) to be told that my pup was already on its way to LA. I insisted that Jeanette get it back, but she argued that it was too late and refused.

She talked me into taking a female tri-color with sort of haphazard markings and beady eyes in a black face, with an odd gait in her back hips. She claimed that this dog was also a show dog but would get along better with Rags, my male.

She said the pup’s AKC paperwork and vet certificates would be mailed shortly, and we had both signed her standard contract.

It is tough to turn down any puppy, so Moxie rode home in my lap.

Although I had no intention of showing or breeding her, I was further chagrined when no AKC or vet papers ever came—despite repeated entreaties to Jeanette. She never called me back or responded to any correspondence.

Finally I called the AKC to see if the litter had even been registered. The following year, I reported Jeanette Chaix and Regalia Tibetan Terriers to a consumer protection unit of California’s state government. They were able to elicit responses from Jeanette where I had failed, so several months later I finally received Moxie’s AKC registry—claiming a different lineage than the one I had been given at the time of her delivery and signed by another breeder (I don't remember the name and dont have the file handy).

I have no evidence, but I suspect that Jeanette either kept my dog or gave him to her co-conspirator to breed because mine met the breed standard so well.

Because I’d chosen him as a relative newborn, she may not have taken time to hold him aside.

My brother’s neighbor had adopted a sick Tibby from our local Tibetan Terrier rescue (at that time in St. Helena, CA), and the head of the rescue said that most of their ill and surrendered dogs had come from Regalia.

After that, Regalia’s website was down for a while; she and her husband apparently moved to Jackson from Forestville to start cheating others.

All of these complaints do not come from just one person or one brief period of time when Jeanette may have been injured—they form a lengthy pattern. It is hard to imagine that so many sick or genetically defective puppies, sold as pedigreed show dogs, could come from anyone who breeds dogs responsibly.

To all of her friends and supporters who think Jeanette is an upstanding person of integrity, I am glad that she has not deceived you, too. If you do not believe any of these complainants, my evidence and photos are in my files.

I see that Jeanette is no longer listed as a TTCA recommended breeder.

I am glad I found this website to add to the evidence against an unscrupulous dog breeder (and to vent my 13-year-old resentment ;-).

By the way, Moxie was spayed as a pup, as I promised Jeanette. She's a wonderful dog, and I am fortunate to have had her.

I am not surprised if a breeder stopped returning your calls if you are this vicious. So a few questions.

1) If this was not the dog you wanted, why in the world did you take delivery on it? Why didn't you hand it back and say "Sorry this is not the dog I bought." Now you say "She's a wonderful dog, and I am fortunate to have had her," then you spend all this time complaining about being cheated?? 2) Why does this complaint say it was written in August 2019, when as you say this all happened more than 13 years ago? 3) You didn't receive the papers and she didn't return your calls.

Then you did and they were indeed AKC registered. Shouldn't that have pretty much been the end of the problem? You didn't recognize either the mother or father, not clear which, but this I would think had little to no impact on your dog or your experience of the dog, unless you were showing it or hiring it out to breed. From the sounds of it this was a pet.

So the actual "crime" here was not returning your phone calls. And as I said, from your tone and your accusations, personally I would have a little trouble taking phone calls from you too. 4) She moved to Jackson to "start cheating others." Who SAYS such a thing? If you looked even briefly at the Tibetan Terrier world you would see that Jeanette Chaix has bred hundreds of Champions and Grand Champions, that many of the breeders in the U.S.

started with Regalia dogs and most of the top ones still use Regalia dogs in their lines because of their quality. This is just a vicious, gossipy, nasty thing to say. As are your ridiculous comments about co-conspirators. What if they just moved?

Lots of people move, for lots of different reasons, none of them nefarious. 5) You say that the local rescue person said that "most of their ill and surrendered dogs had come from Regalia." Did she also happen to mention that pretty much ALL Tibetans in the St. Helena area in the last decades have come from Regalia? That Regalia practically single handedly populated California with Tibetan Terriers at the beginning of the breed's popularity?

I remember when I got my first TT, about 15 years ago, every time you saw another TT in Northern California, you would say "oh, did you get it from Jeanette Chaix?" The answer was always yes. Dogs end up in rescue. It is an unfortunately thing. Sometimes their owners die and their kids put them up.

Sometimes people move to a place where they can't take their dog. Sometimes they lose their houses. And the fact that some of them end up in rescue where they can be placed in good homes means what? That this is all the breeder's fault?

This is b.s. I am more than curious why, 13 years later, you would happen to "find" (or be told about by someone else) a web site where others in the Tibetan Terrier world can ANONYMOUSLY go online and trash one of the country's top breeders. This seems like a really good way to b#*ch without having to put your name on it or own up to anything you are saying. I seriously challenge you to put your name and address up on this.

I will forward it to Jeanette Chaix so she can deal with these charges legally. It seems a whole lot more fair way to go than having open season to defame someone and make charges which even you say you have "no evidence" for.

I agree with the protectiveness for Regalia Tibetan Terriers and Jeanette Chaix. Many years ago, over 20, I purchased a puppy from Jeanette.

She sent me the puppy from across the country in good faith, with only a deposit paid at the time, just to make sure I was happy with my puppy. I loved him and paid for him. Years later, when I reconnected with her, I explained that my dog ended up having a medical problem. We were just chatting.

She asked how old by dog was when I found out about the issue. I explained it was when he was 1 1/2. She replaced him.

Decades later! I would never let anyone question her integrity when she has proven it to me time and time again.

The most dishonest TT breeder on the planet

When Frodo was shipped from Regalia he came with the following: A very large umbilical hernia, NO immunity to puppy diseases, ulcerative colitis, and itchy skin. He later developed hypothyroidism at the age of 3, a heart murmur and he unexpectedly died of CHF 2 weeks ago at the age of nine. He was a wonderful dog in spite of his physical challenges and I am utterly heartbroken that he passed away. Jeannette's reputation is known among other TT breeders and yet no one is shutting her down. I honestly don't know how she sleeps at night.

Would not recommend this breeder.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

We also purchased our first Tibetan from Jeannette. She was as others have said, unreliable, discourteous, evasive, and not breeding to the “standards” for Tibetans ( lord knows how she has managed to win awards at so many shows) our Tibetan was like a son to us, we loved him dearly.

His feet were too small, more like a poodle than a Tibetan, and his chest was too narrow, his back too long. But he was still a dog everyone instantly loved and so very devioted to our family, even the cats! He had 2 separate surgeries to remove cancerous tumors. He developed Chronic hepatitis , storing too much copper in his liver.

With good veterinary care, excellent diet, lots of love, excercise and the bonus of having a younger Tibetan joining the family when the first one was 8, he lived with us until he passed at 16 .

He was still loving and happy , almost completely blind, and deaf. But he had been in the sane house his whole life and he only bumped into things 2-3 time in 3 yrs of compromised vision. We miss him dearly. His little buddy came from a different breeder and is now 10.

We will be looking for a pup again soon for his companion.

Tibetans are extraordinary, Regalia and Jeanette are not. I do not recommend her at all.

Please read the breed standard. Tibetan terrier feet are not like a poodle's feet!

They should be large (in relation to their body) and flat - the snowshoe is not all about long hair! Additionally, a TT is a square dog, and a long back as seen in other small Tibetan breeds is not desirable in a TT.

exactly, that's what I was saying, with all of the characteristics, our dog was not bred to Tibetan Terrier breed standards by Jeanette Chaix. Even though she promised us, We were never given his papers.

I called several times, and even went to her home/kennel several times.

She never answered the phone or door, even though it was clear she was home. None-the less, we loved our first TT to the moon and back.

Dalin Aka

This is an unbelievable "review." It makes it sound like the breeder sent you a deformed dog who died because of her. First, Tibetan's paws when you clip the hair around them, ARE small.

I often joke about my "little poodles" when they come back from the groomer. Their big snowshoe feet are mostly hair. I can't comment on the other "deformities" you mention, but I have never measured by dog's back to see if it is long enough or too long. They are perfect just the way they are.

If this puppy was so ghastly, why didn't you send her back for another one? Second, it is very hard, I know, to deal with things like a dog having both hepatitis and cancer. I truly empathize with this. But how is the breeder to blame for this??

These are not genetic conditions! Clearly too many animals are getting cancer these days. And so are too many people! We are all dealing with cancer in dogs, cats, parents, friends, loved ones.

It is really harsh, and not fair, to say this is the fault of a breeder. Third, the fact that your dog -- at 16 YEARS OLD! -- suffered with loss of sight and hearing. This is to be expected at such an advanced age for a dog.

If my dogs live to 16 they can bump into as much as they want, I will be so happy to still have them with me. I really fail to understand how you can pin these things on a breeder and post a review like this. I'm also really curious about something. You mention that she wins many awards at the dog shows.

If you are seeing this at dog shows, doesn't this mean you are somehow part of the dog show world, or just gossiping with other breeders who are part of the dog show world, about one of the top breeders? I don't know other Tibetan Terrier breeders personally but I have had experience with the dog breeder world in the past, and I found them one of the most gossipy, back-stabbing bunch of peopleI had ever seen in a profession. Worse than Hollywood. There IS a reason she "wins all those awards." She breeds some of the most beautiful, high quality dogs in the breed, and has for a very long time!

I am truly sorry your dog had health problems. But the pieces of this review, and blaming a breeder for cancer and hepatitis, is just not right at all.

She attributed it to neutralizing dogs at a young age-thus depriving them of normal development due to. lack of hormones. She described the painful death of her own TT We exchanged several touching emails.

Because showing dogs involves travel, at times there would be a slight delay in our (free) advice! I understand they have created over 300 champions!

Jerry and Jeanette have generously transported (at their expense), and rescued countless dogs. I recall hearing about dogs from a flooded Texas kennel in need. These dogs, although not Regalias be saved and rehomed.

We purchased a beautiful male puppy from Jeanette 9 years ago. Any promise that she made was never delivered as though I had never talked to her. We did alright on our own to find answers we needed when he had parasites after bringing him home and she did finally provide papers after several phone calls and he was not going to be shown. He instantly became a member of our family. He was absolutely beloved....kind and gentle and smart. He became a therapy dog who many, many people loved. On two occasions I made a contact for people who loved him and wanted to purchase a Tibetan. Jeannette agreed to meet both of them and on both occasions she did not follow through and with one of them she was extremely rude and not at all apologetic for not being there or available at the arranged timing. Neither of them purchased puppies from her.

He would have been nine at the end of next month. He was healthy and full of energy and loved life with us. Last Tuesday evening he developed symptoms that something was wrong with shortness of breath. He died on Saturday morning and we are simply in shock and deeply grieving. He went so fast and our vet did not have a chance to save him. He was immediately put on antibiotics and meds for Valley Fever and he declined at a rate that was impossible to overcome. The consideration today is that it was cancer. Xrays, blood tests and meds to try to help him did not find an answer quickly enough.

I am writing this review because in the past 6 months on two occasions when we were travelling people stopped us to love on our dog and in both conversations it was past Tibetan owners and each one wanted to know what breeder he had come from. When I told them I heard very negative replies. One said "Oh NO" You had better purchase insurance because it is known that she has terrible breeding practices and my Regalia dog died before 10 from cancer." The second person really berated Jeanette and had a similar story of losing her beloved Tibetan before 10 years to cancer. She exclaimed over the improper breeding practices of Regalia. The friend who had Tibetans who sent us to Regalia just lost her beloved female before 10 years to heart disease. In all cases the dogs were treated beautifully and part of wonderful families.

I will say that after our sudden tragic loss last weekend I am very much questioning why this would happen and the out of the blue warnings I have had so recently are very disturbing.

Regalia Tibetan Terriers - So proud to have a Regalia TT

When we decided we wanted a Tibetan Terrier, I found the complaint against Janette online. I called another breeder to inquire about puppies and when I mentioned what I have read about Rigalia She quickly assured me that Janet is honest.

She has been breeding TTS more than 50 years which would not be the case if she were reputable.

We are thrilled with our seven month old puppy. Jeanette gave us very good instructions and we felt confident bringing him home.

Be careful. Janette's puppies have long term health issue.

We spent close to $7500 just within the space of 6 months. My friend, who had two of Janette's dogs also ran into extreme health issues. Nothing showed up immediately - but after the first year, serious problems, stomach issues, seizures, immune disorders, etc. one by one arose.

Sadly we lost our girl, and my friend lost her two dogs.

Just beware. My vet reported her, and every reliable breeder also knows her reputation

Jeanette Chaix is an unethical person and a liar!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I contacted Jeanette Chaix to purchase a Tibetan Terrier. She indicated that she had a male whom she had purchased from Belgium and that he would be perfect for my husband and I.

We drove approximately one hour and 30 minutes to see/meet the dog. Upon arrival, we were told that the dog from Belgium wouldn't be a good fit, but she had another dog for us to meet. Once we met Tashi, a 5 year-old male, he seemed to be a good fit. We had JUST moved and made arrangements to meet her in a week to purchase the dog once we were settled.

We were told that the dog was given back to her (she was the breeder) from the owners in Colorado due to the fact that their older dog was becoming aggressive to Tashi and they decided that he needed a better home. Once we got him home, everything was great until anyone came into our home. At that time, he became VERY aggressive and actually bit 3 people. I called the Colorado owner and was told that the reason they had given the dog back was actually because he was aggressive to their older dog and that he had bitten 3 people!

I immediately called Jeanette and told her everything, and told her that we needed to return Tashi and get our $500.00 cash refunded. After lengthy discussion (she said that she didn't have the money) we agreed on a date to return Tashi and get our money back. We again drove the hour and a half (I called her prior to leaving to confirm) and upon arrival was told that she didn't have the money and didn't know that I was coming. I explained that I had called to confirm, but she didn't have a reasonable explanation after that.

Needless to say, I was extremely upset. She gave me a paper to sign indicating that she was willing to return our money in 2 months! I refused and we agreed on 2 weeks. We did get our money back after several phone calls and Jeanette Chaix's insults to me because I wasn't happy about being lied to about Tashi's disposition.

Beware of this woman, she is a liar and a horrible example of a dog breeder.

I hope the ACK get's involved with her being so unethical. STEER CLEAR OF THIS WOMAN, I PROMISE YOU, IT WON'T BE WORTH IT!!!

Regalia Tibetan Terriers Customer Care Review from Redwood City, California

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

We decided that we wanted a Tibetian Terrier because they r basically a sturdy, healthy, sweet natured dog! Also, I might add beautiful!

I called around in CA to breeders that were listed & spoke to, what seemed at the time, a very sweet older woman. So made an apptm with her & went to her house. She had mentioned that she had a litter that was ready to go home & she also said that she had 2 dogs that were 4 mos old that belonged to a friend of hers. I asked if they were breed by different dogs than hers, but she assured me that her friend had dogs from her stock & they'd change sires to dames & all was well!

When I got there I fell in love with one of her (so called friends dogs) that was 4 mos old.

Unfortunately, she told me that the mother & father of this pup were not available to be seen. It also was a kinda messy situation, with my soon to be dog just abt to Rex her 3rd shot at 4 mos that shd hv been given at 3 mos. she also proceeded to trim my pups nails with regular sewing shears.

Also, not very clean!

However, she told me they got a little behind & hers & her friends dogs were nothing but the healthiest of bred Tibetian Terriors ever going back many many years.

Well, I'm so in love with this pup that took to me right away & I just accepted all she said w/o proof of health from vets on all imp issues. She played her sweet old lady act to the ltr!

Anyway, went home with my new fur baby & called her a couple of times to ask some questions & she was always reassuring. Then my puppy started itching like crazy so I did all the things with food, the vet etc to figure out what this problem was.before I did all this I contacted her & the minute she heard there was a problem she refused to take my calls.

Now I'm very sure that she is an act & cld very well be a puppy mill situation.

I'm writing this for any future folks who think they want to do business with her. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't!

Knowing her in real life, this is true. She does swap dogs with friends from time to time.

Nothing wrong with cutting puppy nails with shears. And the itching is most likely due to you feeding your dog chicken or other poultry , or corn, as those cause severe itching. Get your dog off poultry. What you are feeding that is bad and causing itching , is not the breeders fault.

Sounds like she refused to take your calls because your complaints were ridiculous in nature and not her fault All I read was wrong with your puppy was itching, which could be something YOU are feeding it. The swapping dogs is common in breeders and the nail thing is just weird to me. Puppy nails are tiny, anything can cut them. Change foods and move on.

Stop blaming the breeder and giving her a bad review because you don't know what to feed your dog.

If your dog is itching, be proactive and get an allergy test done. 9/10 Tibetans itch if on the wrong food.

how do we report her to the AKC?

I too bought a puppy from her and have some concerns and also have itching problems. I would like to chat with you about your situation. Is there a way I can contact you privately?

We have loved our Regalia TT's

I don't know where these reviews are coming from. We've been dealing with this breeder since 1986 and I can say that I've never had a bad experience with them. We are in the process of getting our third TT from her and she has been very helpful in picking out the pup that will fit in with our needs. Her dogs are wonderful with great personalities. Jeanette is not breeding as much any more and most of her puppies go to those who've had her pups before. For those of us who have been fortunate to have her dogs, we're thrilled with the results of getting beautiful and healthy pups!

We have had a wonderful loving experience with Jeanette and Jerry Chaix since the 1980s. They have given helpful support in training for our pups and helping rescue Tibetan Terriers in need.

We could not ask for more professional loving support. We feel privileged to be counted among Regalias many loyal family!

these reviews are coming from people who have had negative dealings with a breeder who is untruthful and unethical. you're just lucky that this hasn't happened to you....YET.
